What You Actually Need as a BJJ Beginner
It is easy to think you need a full collection of gear before starting Jiu-Jitsu, but beginners really do not need much.

For gi training (pajama looking uniform), your main item is a properly fitting BJJ gi. You will also need a belt, which is usually included when you buy your first gi or may be provided by your gym.
For no-gi training, a rashguard and athletic shorts or leggings are usually enough. Avoid clothing with pockets, zippers, or anything that could catch on your training partner.
A few other useful items include:
Water bottle
Mouthguard
Sandals or slides for walking off the mat
Athletic tape
Small bag for sweaty gear
One thing that matters more than buying expensive gear is keeping everything clean. Wash your gi, rashguard, and shorts after every training session. Clean training gear is part of being a good teammate.
You do not need the most expensive brands or a huge collection when you start. Buy the basics, make sure they fit well, and figure out what you actually like as you train more. Most gyms will offer these products with their logos on the apparel, I suggest starting there!
