How to Find the Right BJJ Gym
Choosing the right Jiu-Jitsu gym can make a huge difference in whether you enjoy the sport and continue training.

Technique and coaching matter, but the culture of the gym matters just as much.
Before signing up, take advantage of a trial class if the gym offers one. Pay attention to how you feel while you are there.
Ask yourself:
Do the coaches seem approachable? You should feel comfortable asking questions and speaking up if something feels wrong.
How are beginners treated? Good gyms help beginners learn rather than throwing them into situations they are not ready for.
Are there women training there? A gym does not necessarily need a huge women's program, but having other women on the mats can make training more comfortable and give you partners closer to your size.
Do people train safely? Hard training is normal. Reckless training should not be.
Does the schedule realistically work for you? The best gym in the world will not help much if you can rarely attend.
What is the overall atmosphere? Watch how advanced students interact with beginners, how coaches handle mistakes, and whether people seem supportive of each other.
You do not have to join the first gym you visit. Try a few places if you can.
A good gym should challenge you, but it should also be somewhere you feel comfortable learning, asking questions, and coming back to week after week.
